Devotions for Daily Living: God's Omniscience

Introduction:
  1.  Of all the thoughts a man will have, his most important
thought is what he thinks when he thinks of God.

  1. Ultimately, his concept of God will guide his actions.
  2. These thoughts of God permeate into all aspects of his
life affecting all of his actions.
  1. Thus, it is extremely important for him to correctly think
about God.

  1. “Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the
mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of
his riches; but let him who boasts boast of this, that he
understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord who exercises
loving-kindness, justice and righteousness on earth; for I
delight in these things” (Jer. 9:23-24).

1.   Our boasting is not to be in things but in the one true God.
2.   Significance and security are found in relationship (knowing and understanding) the one true God not in self or stuff.  When you are in a relationship with someone, you know and understand the person.

  1. “Therefore, so that I would not become arrogant, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to trouble me – so that I would not become arrogant. I asked the Lord three times about this, that it would depart from me. But he said to me, “My grace is enough for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” So then, I will boast most gladly about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may reside in me. Therefore I am content with weaknesses, with insults, with troubles, with persecutions and difficulties for the sake of Christ, for whenever I am weak, then I am strong” (2 Corinthians 12:7b-10).
1.   God’s power is evident in our weakness.  When we are weak, we rely upon God’s grace and strength.  God’s strength (Christ’s power) becomes our internal strength.
        2.   God knows exactly how to best humble us, keep us humble, and strengthen us.

D.  A key method of knowing God and understanding God is to prayerfully study His     Word.  As we study His Word, we learn about God’s attributes or His:
  1.  Properties
  2.  Excellencies
  3.  Perfections
  4.  Qualities
5.    Character / Characteristics.
  1. Omniscient

  1. Description

  1. God is all knowing.  He knows everything perfectly. He knows everything about everything and everyone.
Since He knows everything, He does not learn.
  1. There is nothing that is hidden from Him.
  2. He knows everything both actual and possible about
everyone and everything at all times.
  1. God sees the future crystal clear while man is unable
to see the future and is only able to dimly see the past.

  1. Selected Scripture (both Omniscient & Omnipresent)

“O LORD, You have searched me and known me.  You
know when I sit down and when I rise up; You understand
my thought from afar.  You scrutinize my path and my lying
down, And are intimately acquainted with all my ways.
Even before there is a word on my tongue, Behold, O LORD,
You know it all.  You have enclosed me behind and before,
And laid Your hand upon me.  Such knowledge is too
wonderful for me; It is too high, I cannot attain to it.  Where
can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your
presence?  If I ascend to heaven, You are there; If I make
my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there.  If I take the wings
of the dawn, If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea, Even
there Your hand will lead me, And Your right hand will lay
hold of me.  If I say, "Surely the darkness will overwhelm me,
And the light around me will be night," Even the darkness is
not dark to You, And the night is as bright as the day.
Darkness and light are alike to You.  For You formed my
inward parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb.  I will
give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well.
My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in
secret, And skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth; Your
eyes have seen my unformed substance; And in Your book
were all written The days that were ordained for me, When
as yet there was not one of them.  How precious also are Your
thoughts to me, O God! How vast is the sum of them!  If I
should count them, they would outnumber the sand. When I
awake, I am still with You.” … “Search me, O God, and know
my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts; And see if
there be any hurtful way in me, And lead me in the everlasting
way.” (Psalm 139:1-18, 23-24)
  1. Importance: Why is God’s omniscience important for Daily Living?

  1. His omniscience comforts the believer.
  2. We can rest in the fact that He knows the future, what is
best for us, how to mold us into what He desires, what is
needed and when, our thoughts, feelings, strengths,
weaknesses, desires, struggles, pains, joys,
disappointments, and prayers.
  1. He knows us better than we know ourselves.
  2. We can be honest with God because He already knows
the truth.  We cannot fool God.
  1. The wicked cannot escape.  They and their deeds are
known.

Conclusion:

  1. Personal Prayer Reflection
  2. God’s omniscience.
  3. Your response to God’s omniscience.
